about

I wrote this right after the first time I went to Nepal. I've been back three more times! I love Nepal. I always figured Laura would sing on this. We traveled together in Nepal. She is so easy to travel with... I think Sarah really did a great, beautiful thing with it though!

lyrics

The Eyes of the Buddha

Namaste
say the children out playing
hand-built swing set rocking in the breeze

namaste
say the women out praying
as you pass by a temple on a side street

shining eyes, black as coal
bright as the sun
the eyes of the Buddha in everyone

namaste
in the wagging tails of dogs
all around the dusty streets of Kathmandu

namaste
on the lips of many pilgrims
climbing countless stairs up to Swayambu

shining eyes, black as coal
bright as the sun
the eyes of the Buddha in everyone

Namaste
says the man delivering eggs
stacked so high his bicycle is bending

namaste
says the cop directing traffic
she looks tough even as she smiles

shining eyes, black as coal
bright as the sun
the eyes of the Buddha in everyone

Namaste
underneath the bodhi tree
tying strings attached to fragile wishes

namaste
sings the woman in the morning
kneeling in the dust to wash her dishes
