Post Apocalyptic Love Song

from Into the Darkness by Fred Gillen Jr

/

about

An old friend of mine used to say "every day above ground is a good day." I could never agree more than I do now! Every day is precious... even at its worst being alive is amazing.

I've got a second draft of this song from October 2019. I finished it when the Pandemic hit. I have post-apocalyptic dreams. I've been having them since high school. At the beginning of the Covid Pandemic I envisioned a post-apocalyptic world. Now I really believe we will get through this despite the corporate money-grabbing and inept (understatement of the century) leadership in Washington. We will get through it because most people give a shit about each other!

lyrics

on a rickety old shopping cart I rolled you into this former town
the cracks in the sidewalk bumping flat-wheeled through your skull
forced off the road, because it’s jammed with rusted automobiles

light a fire, boil some water
pass the last bottle and drink to another day above ground

I hear a clarinet wailing in the distance
there are still some acoustic instruments
you hear their fleeting sounds in the post-electric night
if the music ever stops we’ll know that things ain’t right

light a fire, boil some water
pass the last bottle and drink to another day above ground

I miss turning on our electric heater
I miss our coffee pot and I miss going to the theatre

these days the nights have gotten much darker
instead of traffic we hear coyotes in their packs
but I can feel you here even if this is the end
together we can face never going back

light a fire, boil some water
pass the last bottle and drink to another day above ground
