about

On December 23, 2020 I moved from the place I grew up and had always lived in Westchester County, NY, to a village further up the Hudson River in Greene County. This was a move from crowded suburbs of New York City to a rural village on the Hudson River near the Northeast Catskills. My friend Lisa Moir refers to the energy in Westchester as "ambient stress," and that energy had been taking a toll on me. Being a broke folk musician in the wealthiest county in the country was not compatible with my nature boy personality, though I walked in the woods a lot to stay sane. That first winter I was still running my old recording studio Woody's House in Croton -on- Hudson, and besides working on the old house we'd just bought, I was building my new studio Esperanza Recording in 3/5 of our detached garage. (The new studio wasn't completed until May of 2021.) In the meantime I set up my old digi002 interface and 15 year old laptop, with a few guitars and the upright bass I'd just bought from my high school friend and bassist and conductor Rich Simons. I was still not really allowed to play any shows because of Covid and I started playing around with the instruments and came up with some instrumental music, which reflects the peacefulness of that winter, and how much I was enjoying my earliest forays into hiking in the Catskills and along the Hudson. It was a nice balm for the trauma of the Pandemic stealing away father-in-law and my career, vocation, and livelihood . I think it's a beautiful little bit of simple, playful music. I'm sorry I didn't put it out there sooner. I hope it brings you peace. Fred G
