Tatopani means hot water. The song is named for the town Tatopani, a hot springs town which since the destruction of Kodari by earthquake a few years ago, is the nearest thing to a border town in Nepal with Tibet (China.) The road has improved since the first time I rode up it, but it was basically right out of an Indiana Jones movie. Dirt and rock road with no guardrail barely wide enough for a car in spots, with a 1,000 foot drop if you slide off the road. It is pretty bumpy too, and if it rains you drive through some streams. It goes through Sindupulchok, one of the most beautiful places I've even been, in the "foothills" of the Himalayas. Since I wrote this song I've gotten to spend a little time with the vice mayor of Barabise, one of the biggest towns up there. I also walked through the paths in this region a bit, for three days, before playing a concert in Ramche with the Greenheart.
